Calvin Hyrkas - Portfolio

No AI, just vibes

I'm Calvin Hyrkas. I'm an aspiring game developer, artist, musician, and apparently I'm not half bad at web design either.

This is the web page that will be showing off some of my best works. Any image shown can be clicked on to view the source in a new tab.

Most of these are cherry-picked for time. I have other works, but I would need to assemble a very large, proper portfolio before being confident enough to show that. So this one will include 5 examples from each skillset.

That includes this website, as well. For some reason. I think this is the most amount of effort that I've put into anything web-based. Very glad I put that much effort into it. I think it came out very well.

I didn't have anywhere else to put this for this assignment, but click here to play my python game, The Florida Trail

Art Stuffs

Stuff I drew! I use Procreate on Apple iPad, but also have skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Stained Self

The concept that I threw together for a Painting project. This one was inspired by Stained Glass Art, as well as the early 3D models that came from older video games from consoles like the Nintendo 64 or Sony Playstation.

The actual painting is actually pretty good too, but the colors on this one are richer. We just don't have the right colors of paint to truly recreate how this is meant to look.

Baron Bean-Box: Character Render

The main antagonist of my game concept that I am actively working on. This is Baron Bean-Box. He wants his coffee products that his kingdom produces to be a bit more flavorful, and so seeks to steal the "Fragrances" from the Creme Isles.

He is based on a coffee cup (including his color palette), but the box on his head is inspired by crates that would be shipping coffee beans to places like Caribou and The "Coffee" Shop of Which Shall Not Be Named.

Nilla: Character Render

Nilla, the playable character and protagonist of my game concept. She is a light and bubbly person who would not be afraid to shout "Ahoy-hoy!" when greeing you.

She has to stop Baron Bean-Box with her ghost form, allowing her to dash in any direction and pass through certain walls. This will open up a lot of movement and puzzle opportunities.

Her color palette is inspired by different flavors of Creme Soda!

Vin: Character Concept Art

Being quick with this one, this is some concept art of one of my other characters. His color palette was inspired by Perry The Platypus of Phineas & Ferb.

Glittering Glacier

This environment concept art of a locale from a different game concept was one of the first ever concieved for said game. The typical "snow level" environment would have been shaken up with Constuction Scaffolding and mining equipment. The crystal deposits would be mined for their conductive properties.

Adobe Illustrator Stuffs

I only wanted to include 3 of these, considering these are very small projects.

These came from a larger project called "Interfacing", which was an icon pack that I made for something called Cocoon Shell.

Gameboy Advance

Icon for the Gameboy Advance. The gradient on this one came out very nicely, and I love how clean the screen looks. I had to use the pen tool to make that custom border for the screen. This is probably one of the most detailed icons to come from this pack.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Icon for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Also called the Super Famicom in Japan, this one was easily one of my favorites to make. The SNES controller is already super clean, and it just made this one easier to make. The gradient work on this one is super clean.

PlayStation 2

Even though I've never played on any Sony console, I still hold very high respect for the legacy that the first two consoles left. I hope that I captured that well with this rendition of the PS2 controller, colorful face buttons and all.

Music

I compose my own music from scratch. NO LOOPS, NO AI, ALL ORIGINAL!!

There are way more than 5 examples here because I am very passionate about my music.

World 1-3

For use in level 3 of my game concept. Takes place in a rainy forest, and is one of four variants of this song. Very calm, very soothing.

Battle - VS Leader Vinny!

My cringe self-insert Pokemon battle theme. Inspired by Cynthia's Battle theme, this is one of my best songs yet. Great energy, very climactic.

Aurora Atoll

Created initially for a custom Mario Kart track, made to work with a custom Mario Party board. Aurora Atoll is an environment I came up with. It involves a set of rocky isles interconnected by bridges of pure light. Think Rainbow Road but instead of a prism, it's the northern lights.

Aurora Atoll - ADVANCE

Closer to the original Mario Kart concept, this one was made as a more intense version of the previous song for the last 5 turns of a Mario Party board. Very happy with how this one came out. Less scerene, more intense.

Interstellar Interstates (Act 2)

Composed for the same game concept (Planetary Panic) as Glittering Glacier, this takes place in the second level of the first zone, as the player character descends back to their planet from space, weaving between asteroids as quickly as possible.

Synthetic Sands (Act 2)

Also from Planetary Panic, this one takes place in a vaporwave-vibe styled desert. It was hard to find a way to combine the smooth, chilled out vibe of Synthwave and the fast, upbeat action of the game concept. One of my favorite compositions to this day.

Bouyant Battery (Act 1)

Planetary Panic Song. This took place on the scaffolding of a massive hydroelectric powerplant created by the main antagonist. Technically, your goal is to shut it down so that the main villian is unable to power his schemes, but is the clean energy really that bad?

GALVANIZED AND GROOVY

Planetary Panic Song. The Boss Encounter music. Intentionally, it is a very short, 30 second loop. It contains instruments samples from many old games. The piano originates from Super Mario World, the guitar comes from Pokemon Black/White, and the twinkle sound was from Kirby's Dreamland 3. The percussion also uses the DMC samples from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Waterlogged Walls (Act 2)

Planetary Panic Song. A collaberation between myself and a friend, we composed this one to be reminicent of Castle Eggman Zone from Sonic Robo Blast 2. It takes place in an ancient, haunted, flooded castle. This part specifically takes place deep inside the haunted castle. The spooky, haunted vibe seems to be my specialty with a lot of things, not just music.

You're A Wormhole Wizard!

Planetary Panic Song. Special Stage Music inspired by "It's Pizza Time!" from Pizza Tower. Plays over a timed escape sequence. The energy slowly ramps up over the course of the song. It is not intended to loop, like all the others.
